É domingo na manhã, meu tempo normal para escrever, e só quero fornecer uma atualização breve. Eu cheguei no Brasil no fevereiro, graças a Deus. Tive um pouco tempo na cidade onde trabalharei. No março comecei um programa de língua e missiologia numa outra cidade, e vou estar aqui no programa até junho. Fico agora em um ponto de inflexão com a língua Português. É um momento de alegria, porque a missa está tornando-se de novo uma fonte de consolo e eu estou começando escrever e pensar no Português naturalmente.

It’s Sunday morning, my usual time for writing, and I just want to give a brief update. I arrived in Brazil in February, thanks be to God. I spent a little time in the city where I’ll work. In March, I started a language and missiology program in another city, and I’ll be here in the program until June. I am now at a turning point with the Portuguese language. It is a joyful moment, because the mass is becoming once again a source of consolation and I am beginning to write and think naturally in Portuguese.

Para mergulhar-me totalmente no Português, e porque tenho trabalhos de casa e uma agenda de aulas que está prestes a aumentar, não vou escrever aqui até junho ou mais tarde. É claro que ainda podemos manter contato.

To fully immerse myself in Portuguese, and since I have homework and a class schedule that’s about to get busier, I won’t be writing here until June or later. Of course, we can still keep in touch.

Christ with us

 AMDG Brothers and Sisters, I, a pilgrim standing still as my God comes to me, to you, who walk beside me. The Joy, Hope, Love, and Peace of our Lord God, through Christ his son, to each of you. And MERRY CHRISTMAS!! I am going to share with you something that I struggle with, that I suspect a lot of you struggle with in one way or another as well. But I’ll speak for myself. The conventional church names me a sinner. Not in the general way of all mankind. Not for my pride or selfishness or gluttony. But because of the medical, legal, and social choices I made to live as a man despite the female characteristics I was born with; that is, to live fully alive. In some sense, I experience this judgement as a hidden figure, pieced together through the scars and stories and activism that swirl up around it. Jean Valjean: Who Am I?

AMDG I, a soul who has come so far and struggled for so long, who would conceal himself for evermore and pretend he is not the man he was before; to you, my friend on the stage of life, bearing wounds I will never see and fighting battles I cannot imagine. I intended to write in this blog much more about my spiritual formation, but am finding that I share rather more of my thoughts and experiences. Like Peter and John in Acts 3, this is what I have, and so this is what I will give. I love the musical Les Miserables. After seeing the film adaptation in 2012, I read an English translation of the book by Victor Hugo (over the course of 4 years. It was a big book.). The movie is one which I come back to again and again. It is spiritually transfixing and emotionally cathartic, and I relate to so many of the characters: Javert for his moral perfectionism, Jean Valjean for his ceaseless hard work, Enroljas and his band for their fervor, Cosette for her shelteredness, Marius for his earnestnes...
